Stromboli - Significant volcanic eruptionTue, 11 Oct 2022 10:01

On 9 October at 07:22 UTC, the monitoring networks of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the Laboratory of Experimental Geophysics (LGS), recorded the occurrence of a pyroclastic flow from the northern crater area that channelled along the Sciara del Fuoco (northern Stromboli) and reached the sea. After this event, a tsunami of 2 cm has been detected by the Punta Labronzo and Punta dei Corvi buoys, as reported by the Laboratory of Experimental Geophysics (LGS).

The phenomenon was immediately followed by the partial collapse of the terrace crater, and a considerable lava overflow that spread along the Sciara del Fuoco branching into several lava flows that reached the coastline.

On 10 October 2022 at 04:42 UTC, a further collapse of the central area of the crater happened, causing seismic tremor. The effusive activity is ongoing.

The Department of Civil Protection has increased the alert for the Stromboli volcano from yellow to orange following the recent activity.

Italy - Volcano eruption (ECHO 05 Dec 2022)Mon, 05 Dec 2022 11:33

  • On 4 December after 14.00 UTC the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported the occurrence of lava and pyroclastic flows from the northern and the central-southern sectors of the crater area of the Stromboli Volcano (Aeolian Islands, just north of Sicily Island). The pyroclastic activity was most probably followed by the partial collapse of the terrace crater in the north sector.
  • The pyroclastic flows (that generated significant ash falls) channelled along the "Sciara del Fuoco" (northern flank of the volcano) and reached the sea around 16.00 UTC. According to INGV and the Italian Civil Protection, a tsunami event with sea level change up to 1.5 metres has been detected.
  • As of 5 December, there are no reports of any casualties or damage across the Stromboli Island and the Aeolian Islands.

Updates on volcanic activity (Smithsonian)

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Stromboli report has been published on 30 Nov 2022 08:08.
INGV reported that during 21-27 November activity at Stromboli was characterized by ongoing explosions at three vents in Area N (North Crater area) and two vents in Area C-S (South-Central Crater area); weather conditions prevented visual confirmation of activity during 21-23 November. Low-intensity explosions from the N1 vent (Area N) ejected course material (bombs and lapilli) less than 80 m high at a rate of 3-7 explosions per hour. Spattering and occasional low-intensity explosive activity was visible at the N2 vent (Area N). Explosions from at least two vents in S2 (Area C-S) ejected ash and coarse material over 250 m above the vent at a rate of 6 events per hour. Source: Sezione di Catania - Osservatorio Etneo (INGV)
