  • On 5-6 April, the republics of Dagestan and Chechnya, North Caucasus, Russia have been affected by heavy rainfall triggering overflow of rivers, flooding and landslides, resulting in fatalities, damage, and traffic and service disruptions.
  • Media, as of 7 April, report of six fatalities and more than 200 people rescued in Dagestan. More than 4 000 people were evacuated due to the breach at the Gedzhukh reservoir, while 300 people were evacuated before several buildings collapsed in Makhachkala city. In total, 6 000 houses have been flooded and 1.5 million people have been affected in Dagestan. 55 temporary shelters were established for those displaced.
  • Additionally, energy and gas systems, as well as roads and railways have been disrupted. Also in Chechnya, vehicles and bridges have been damaged, while no homes sustained damage.
  • Authorities have issued a regional emergency and warn of continued hazardous conditions.
  • Over the next 48 hours, additional moderate rainfall is forecast over Dagestan.
