  • On 3-4 July, an intense volcanic activity characterized by explosions and lava emission was recorded in Stromboli volcano, Aeolian islands, Sicily region, southern Italy.
  • On 4 July at 16.18 UTC, pyroclastic and lava flows occurred and rapidly developed along the slopes of Sciara del Fuoco, north-western Stromboli, reaching the sea. In addition, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a huge explosion with an ash plume approximately 1,000 m high.
  • Following this volcanic unrest, the Italian Civil Protection has raised the alert level from ORANGE to RED (the maximum level). The population on the island is invited to keep themselves informed and follow the instructions provided by the local civil protection authorities.

  • On 11 July at 12.07 UTC, a paroxysmal event occurred over the summital crater of Stromboli volcano. This event resulted in an eruptive column and a pyroclastic flow along the Sciara del Fuoco slope that reached the sea.
  • The pyroclastic flow has propagated into the sea for dozens of meters from the coastline. The phenomenon along the Sciara ended at around 12.10 UTC.
  • According to the Italian Civil Protection, the alert level of the volcano stands at RED (the maximum level and it means that the volcano is strongly unbalanced), and as of 8 July, a state of extraordinary mobilization of the National Service has been declared. The Civil Protection Department will coordinate resources and interventions to support the Sicilian Region and local Civil Protection.
