Indonesia - Volcanic activity and landslide (ECHO 13 May 2026)Fri, 08 May 2026 09:40

  • As of 7 May, at 22.41 UTC (8 May at 7.41 local time), the Dukono volcano, located in the northern Halmahera island (the main island of the Maluku islands, eastern Indonesia), started to erupt. The ash column reached more than 10 km above the summit as of 7 May at 23.29 UTC and the ash cloud is moving northward. The eruption and ash emission are currently still ongoing.
  • Media reports, as of 8 May, 20 rescued hikers remained trapped by the eruption across the affected area.
  • The alert level issued by MAGMA remains red (maximum level), and the Aviation Colour Code (VONA) is red. All activities are prohibited within a 4 km radius of the crater.
  • Moreover, heavy rainfall has been affecting the Sumatra island since 5 May, causing a landslide that resulted in casualties. Media reports one fatality and seven injured people due to a landslide that occurred in the area of the Jorong Kampuang Baruah, Nagari Sungai Landia and Ampek Koto districts (Agam regency, West Sumatra province).

  • The eruption of the the Dukono volcano, located in the northern Halmahera island (the main island of the Maluku islands, eastern Indonesia) on 7 May, resulted in casualties. Its activity is still ongoing, on 11 May a new explosion occurred with an ash column that reached 2 000 m above the crater.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), a total of three people have died due to volcanic material that buried their bodies. Additionally 15 people have been rescues by the emergency teams.
  • The same source reports that on 8 May the local authorities issued the permanent closure of climbing the Dukono volcano on Friday. Through this decision, operators, managers and climbing service providers are prohibited from giving climbing permits to anyone. The alert level of the volcano has been downgraded to level 2 (in a scale from 1 to 4).

The Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) reported that eruptive activity at Dukono continued during 23-29 April. Daily white-and-gray ash plumes rose 400-1,400 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. The Alert Level remained at Level 2 (on a scale of 1-4) and the public was warned to stay 4 km away from the Malupang Warirang Crater.
