Iceland - Volcanic eruption (ECHO 21 Jul 2025)Wed, 16 Jul 2025 10:10

  • Following an intense period of seismic activity registered in the early morning of 16 July, the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported a new eruption. The eruption occurred on 16 July at 3.56 UTC and was located southeast of Litla-Skógfell.
  • The eruptive fissure was approximately 700–1,000 metres long and has propagated northward since the eruption began. Lava was mostly flowing southeast but has not approached any infrastructure. Gas emissions have been recorded and are expected to affect Reykjanesbær, Vogar, Sandgerði, and Garð due to southeasterly winds.
  • Following this eruption, authorities declared an emergency under the Civil Protection and Emergency Management framework.
