  • On 1 April at 9.45 UTC, a new eruption occurred just north of the protective barrier near Grindavík town (Reykjanes peninsula, south-western Iceland). An eruptive fissure, extending southwards, of about 1,200 m has been registered by the Icelandic Meteo Office (IMO) between the barriers and the town. In the afternoon of 1 April the volcanic activity appeared to have decreased.
  • According to media, 40 houses and the tourists at the nearby Blue Lagoon have been evacuated. 
  • An emergency level of Civil Protection has been issued due to this event.

  • Following the volcanic eruption that occurred on 1 April at 9.45 UTC in Mt. Þorbjörn, north of Grindavík in the Reykjanes peninsula, south-western Iceland the activity is decreasing.
  • According to the Icelandic Meteo Office (IMO) reports, as of 2 April, a 20 km volcanic dyke has formed, which is the longest since the activity began in November 2023, and the ground has subsided more than 25 cm close to the Svartsengi area. The same source reports that the eruptive activity has been decreasing and has now stopped.
  • The Icelandic Civil Protection lowered the civil protection level from emergency to danger since the area is still unstable.
