The breezy trades are expected to last through the weekend, National Weather Service forecasters said, due to a high-pressure ridge north of the Hawaiian isles and herald some relief from the muggy weather. Typical windward and mauka showers are expected overnight and early mornings.

NASA captured a visible image of as it was becoming a tropical storm and an infrared image after it transitioned. Akoni developed as Tropical Depression 12E on Sept. 4 in the far eastern Pacific Ocean.

Akoni weakened to a post-tropical remnant low overnight southeast of the islands and is no longer a tropical storm. Clocking in with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, Akoni was centered around 690 miles south-southeast of Hilo and heading west at 16 mph at 5 a.m., according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

Akoni is about 835 miles southeast of Hilo and moving westward at about 9 mph, but forecast maps show it passing south of the islands.
